I usually find something red or red-ish for today and when I discovered these I knew I had this year’s JSF Valentine’s gift. Besides, that octopus is just as cute as anything Hallmark comes up with. Hooooot!

Although why he’s snorkeling has me a little perplexed. Perhaps he’s keeping his goggles full of sea water and the end of the snorkel below the surface as he comes up on land to hoot octopus bubbles at us. Wait, I just counted legs…apparently he’s hooting sextapus bubbles at us.

Besides the adorable mascot, one of the (many) things I liked about these chips is that they are fish shaped. I guess tripus shaped rather but to me they look less like hooty little three legged sea creatures and more like fancy split tailed aquarium fish. In fact, I think I may have had some of these in my 55 gallon tank. The fishypus crackers are also bigger than I had thought they might be; the pictures on the packaging are about to scale.

Another perk is that they don’t smell or taste fishy. There is a slight fishesque whiff, which I would expect from octopus chips, but the flavor is more bitey paprika/radish powder mixed with the wheaty-ricey of the cracker than it is octopus. For sure there is an octopus taste but it’s mild and blends effortlessly and almost invisibly with the wheaty rice and snappy paprika and radish. Ordinarily I’d dock points for such a timid main flavor but it kinda works here.

Lastly, I like the planky rice poofy fishpus cracker. It’s a nice light crunchity munch with a very airy texture. Of the many fishy things I’ve reviewed, these I’d come back for a second helping of.

Rating of 3.5 Wasabi Peas out of a possible 5.

[11,30,16,40

post-1492","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-35-peas","category-chips","category-savory","category-zkorea
["GET
