Wedding Registry Woes and Wows

So we’ve been working on our wedding registry… It’s tough. We’re both old enough that we’ve got a lot of the standard kitchenware and appliance things that you’re supposed to ask for. We’re also notoriously difficult to shop for on ordinary gift-giving occasions like birthdays and Christmas.

Also, a lot of the stuff we’d really like is just far too extravagent for a wedding registry. I mean, I put a Segway on my personal Amazon.com wish list, but that was because I was feeling silly. If there’s a 17″ PowerBook on the wedding list, not everyone is going to get the joke.

On the other hand, if someone out there DOES get us one of the new PowerBooks, I’m certainly not going to complain about it.

At any rate, so far we’re registered at Sears and Amazon. Of the two stores, I much prefer the Sears registry system.

At Amazon, finding the gift registry is a challenge. At Sears, it’s one of the biggest things on the top banner. Both places will let you search for people by name and city once you find the registry. Buying gifts from either one seems like it’d be pretty straightforward. When it comes to adding things to the registry though, that’s where Sears really shines.

My Fiancee created the Amazon registry with her account. When I tried to add things to the list while signed in to my account, I couldn’t. We double checked, and my name was on the registry with hers. Perhaps there was some form we needed to fill out to give my account permission to add to a list she created? I did some poking around, but I couldn’t find anything. Eventually, I gave in and emailed their customer support crew.

Here’s their response:

Thanks for writing to us at Amazon.com.

After researching your concern , I would like to inform you that since the wedding registry was created by your fiancee, you will not be able to add items to this wedding registry. It is only your fiancee who can add items to this registry.

You’d think that a wedding registry would be set up so that both the bride and the groom could add things to it. I mean, apart from Dennis Rodman, most weddings do involve more than one person…

Thank you for your response. I must say that I’m rather disappointed in your wedding registry system if it has such a basic limitation. It would be much more useful if both the bride and the groom could add to the list…

They wrote back fairly quickly.

Thank you for writing to Amazon.com with your comments about our Wedding Registry service.

I will be sure to pass your message on to the appropriate department in our company for consideration. Customer feedback like yours is very important in helping us continue to improve the selection and service we provide.

Thank you for shopping at Amazon.com. We hope to see you again soon.

Best regards,
J K

We’ll see if they make any changes.

The Sears system is great, especally compared to that. You just need to type in a password and you can add things to the registry on-line. And they give you some barcodes that you can print out and take to one of their stores so that you can add things to the on-line list from there just by having them scanned. Very nifty.
