I blather on about wine enough that I decided I might as well create a new category specifically about it…
The orange wine is fizzing away merrily in the kitchen sink. Tomorrow I’ll top it off and some time on Saturday I’ll put the water lock in place. The wine yeast is devouring the sugar and producing happy bubbles of CO2. The whole kitchen smells strange. Like a very sweet orange muffin.
And speaking of sweet things and wine, I found an article through FARK about the inventor of Captain Crunch. He’s retired as a flavor chemist and he’s turned his talents to making wine. Very cool.
It reminds of something I ran into in Switzerland. Most people, when they think of culturally “Swiss” foods, think of chocolate or cheese. But Switzerland makes a huge amount of wine. Pretty much every mountainside we saw was covered with grapes. The thing is, they don’t export their wine. They just drink it themselves.
Probably the strangest thing was the lunch we had at the hospital at Sierre. The hospital cafeteria had a house wine. Literally. The label on the bottle clearly stated that it was the wine of the hospital at Sierre. This sort of implies that it was actually made on the premises.
