January Smithee Movies

So, we watched a couple of really bad movies this weekend. The first was an Anna Nichole Smith action movie called “To The Limit” and the second was a joint US/Japanese movie called “Virus.”

To The Limit was basically an excuse for women to remove their clothes and for things to get blown up. In those respects, it succeeded admirably. Some attempt was made at a story revolving around a rogue CIA agent, a lost CD-ROM, a family of mafiosi and some sort of revenge for a black-ops mission that went bad back in the 1970’s. It was convoluted to the point of contortionistic. Three quarters of the way through the movie I asked the folks I was watching it with if anyone had any clue what was going on, and nobody raised their hands. Some movies have a plot, this one had a conspiracy.

On the other hand, lots of stuff blew up, so that was nice.

Virus (aka Fukkatsu no hi) was billed as an action packed Sci-Fi thriller. Instead it turned out to be a fantastically depressing post-apocalyptic drama. Nothing like a film about the near extinction of humanity due to an accident with a vial of stolen biowarfare germs to brighten up your weekend… It’ll go on my list of “Movies to Slit Your Wrists To” right after “The Day After” and a bit before “Aguirre, The Wrath of God.” Even worse, it wasn’t quite bad enough to use for the Smithees, unless we’re a bit low in some categories. There’s some refreshingly bad science where the doctor who invented the MM-88 virus rants about how fast it reproduces while giving no actual numbers for a base comparison. And Chuck Connors is laughable as a British submarine Captain. He doesn’t even try to change his accent…
