Home Fry Day

When you were a kid, and you had a vacation, you spent a lot of time doing nothing. As an adult with vacation time, I’m finding it hard to fall into that old pattern. There’s always stuff to do… For example, I’ve already gotten the week’s shopping done. I’ve got a crock pot going with dinner for tonight. I’ve replaced the ceiling light fixture in the kitchen, and I’m getting ready to put together a set of shelves that just arrived.

The biggest thing so far has been the kitchen light. That’s been on my pending list since I put the wine glass racks up back in December. The old light was one that hung from a chain, with a fake oil lamp chimney of frosted glass hiding the light bulb, and a metal shade around it to reflect the light downward. The biggest problem with it was that it hung so that the bottom was an inch or two over six feet off the floor. My wife and I are both almost exactly six feet tall, so we could pass underneath it without a problem.

Until winter came around. Then the added altitude from a pair of boots and a warm hat would sometimes result in the same head-knocking light show that our taller friends had to deal with year-round.

The next big thing is the shelves… We’ve been trying to get a set of shelves in the right color for… well… more months than I can easily remember. The first two sets of shelves were back ordered for a month, then arrived and were the wrong type of wood. It took us a while to send them back. When the replacement arrived, they only sent one set of shelves instead of two, and it was the wrong kind of wood. That one still needs to go back. But a few days ago, the third shipment arrived, containing the second set of shelves… In about ten minutes, I’ll be opening the box to see if it’s the right wood this time. I’m a bit nervous about that…
