Craptracking

Just a couple tools and links for people who are having problems with creeps in their comments. I got the idea from Wil Wheaton over at wilwheaton.net (yes, that Wil Wheaton). He’s been having some problems with creeps posting crap in his comments… It’s gotten bad enough that he’s offered a $1000 bounty, and I figured I’d share some of the tools I use here.

First and foremost, there’s MT-Blacklist:

This is really handy… Not only for blocking people from posting certain URLs, but also for finding them in existing comments and scrubbing them out. It’ll also give you the IP address of whoever was posting comments.

Then there’s AWStats:

Log file analysis is both fun and useful. It’s fun to see that folks from India and the Netherlands have been visiting… Plus I’ve used it to find a couple folks who’ve ‘borrowed’ my pictures without crediting me.

Geobytes

This one is actually a little bit scary. It gives the physical location of an IP address… It’s kind of big-brotherish. On the other hand, if people are posting seriously vile stuff in your comments, this will let you know which police department would have jurisdiction.
