Arcana Understood

Saturday was Rob’s birthday thing. We wound up learning how to play Texas Hold-Em poker, which was kind of fun. Of course, the big thing is that now I can understand some of the strange terminology that crops up in posts from Wil Wheaton, or in the thousand and one Spam emails I get advertising online casinos.

If you don’t play the game, don’t worry. It’s not going to become a major subject of posting. I’m not about to start spouting off strange terms like “Flop”, “River” “Turn” or “Fourth and Fifth Street”. You won’t even have to worry about if the “Big Blind” and the “Little Blind” refer to Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder.

For the most part, I’m not a fan of card games. And I’m certainly not likely to start playing cards for money. I don’t have anything against it, but I just don’t see the appeal. Gambling, to me, is an activity that basically consists of taking the contents of all your friends wallets and throwing it all up in the air, but you get to keep whatever you can catch before it hits the ground.
