Mentaiko Mayo (Fukuoka Limited) Food Drops

Hrmmmm. Well, I guess I sort of put myself up to this by buying Mentaiko Mayo Food Drops or, as J-List says, “Pollock Roe and Mayonnaise Food Drops” since I ultimately have to taste the snacks I review (and nobody wanted to do a guest review of Pollock Roe and Mayonnaise Food Drops. Imagine that). This was my one fishy snack (winnowed down from about 5 that I wanted) because Pollock Roe and Mayonnaise? What? Then when I started in on the Japanese Mad Food Science derived Food Drops I thought “Uh-oh. They are really good at this Food Drop business. Well save beer.” I pretty much knew that this Food Drop was going to taste exactly like Pollock Roe and Mayonnaise.

The good news is that these Food Drops taste creamy, a tad salty and real fish fishy which is what I’d expect mayonnaise and pollock roe to taste like. Assuming pollock roe is anything like salmon roe or sturgeon roe or whatever other kind of roe I’ve had along the way. I’m no roe connoisseur so I am uncertain if they have different flavors of their own or not. Anyhow, once again the Japanese Mad Food Scientists have concocted something in hard candy form that is darned spot on to the original. The bad news is…these are Pollock Roe and Mayonnaise Food Drops. Yuck. Well yuck in a “sucking on creamy, salty, fishy hard candy” kind of way. I’d probably feel the same about tuna salad food drops and I like tuna salad. Just because you CAN make it doesn’t mean you should.

For the general Mad Food Science I give these drops 2 peas, but only because I am astounded by how these Japanese Mad Food Scientists are getting the flavor so spot on. I won’t go any higher though because really…pollock roe and mayonnaise? I have yet to actually finish one of these drops while reviewing them. I have yet to actually disturb the mold marks on the edge of these drops while reviewing them. This is a “get the flavor and get out” sort of candy. If you like pollock roe and mayonnaise or this is culturally your thing, feel free to add 1.5 to 2 peas to the rating because they do what they set out to do very well. As for the rest of us, these are not something you are likely to come back for at all in the infinite Japanese Snack Food Buffet. More than likely, you’ll probably wad it up discretely in your napkin and get rid of it as soon as you can. There is a reason that the Chinsuko Food Drops are all gone while the Pollock Roe and Mayonnaise Drops came back from Massachusetts untouched.

Rating of 2 wasabi peas out of a possible 5 wasabi peas.

Candy flavored like a main dish? That sounds plenty of disgusting

Yes. Exactly. But disturbingly accurate candied main dish. Those crazy Japanese Mad Food Scientists.
