Konpeito

These things look like someone shrunkey dunk one of those plastic nubbly balls that shake around in all sorts of weird trajectories when you put batteries in them, so of course they had to come home with me. I’m a sucker for miniaturization because CUUUUUUTE! (kawaii? Kawaii!) Little itty bitty Oreo sandwich cookies? Tried them. Mini M&Ms? Yup. Bite sized anything? OOooooOOOOOoooo! And although these fellas won’t vibrate on their own, they reminded me of little itty bitty replicas of the weird buzzing balls, except sugary-ier. Much sugary-ier. In fact, there is a way to get Konpeito to vibrate and that is by eating a ton of them while still holding the bag. I guarantee you that there will be vibrating and that vibrating will most likely transmit through the bag.

I probably should just wrap this whole review up right now and tell you that these are round colored rock candy blobits because that’s exactly what they are. There isn’t even a marked difference in flavor among the colors, it’s all just sugary. Yellow sugary, green sugary, pink sugary, and so on and sugary forth. I even tried a blind taste test to see if there was any sort of flavor difference and I concluded that there is a very faint unquantifiable taste deviance between hues, but only if you think really, really hard about it. It certainly wasn’t anything as pronounced as lime versus peppermint. I’m going to go on record as saying Konpeito = non flavored rock candy.

This is not a bad and condemning thing, however. I happen to like rock candy quite a bit so in theory I’d be clam happy with itty bitty rock candies. In theory, I’d also be going into the experience expecting mini-rock candy bits. I wasn’t, I was disappointed. Ah well, live and learn, no pea points deducted for a pre-biased reviewer. However, no pea points gained either for a fairly standard and unremarkable basic sugar flavor. What Konpeito does get pea points for is its tendency to crumble neatly into tinier sugar nodules after being sucked on for a bit. That’s pretty cool. They are also a really good size for popping into a cup of coffee, so utility pea points there (two is about the same as a standard sugar packet). I’d say that Konpeito is a good serviceable 3 pea snack with an extra half pea thrown in for the crumbly thing and the coffee thing for a total

rating of 3.5 Wasabi Peas out of a possible 5.
