Chili Squid Pretz
Oh dear lord these beasties are fishy. Right out of the package POW! Fish to the nose. This is not the best of first impressions. They are also an odd textured Pretz – less Gardetto’s baked bread sticky and more light crispity deep fried wanton noodle crunchy. They are still delightfully crispity but definitely a different Pretz than we are used to seeing here at the JSFR.
They are also very much chili spicy which can sneak right up on you. One minute you might be thinking “Hey, that’s got a little bite” and the next you have to pause for a moment and let the burn die down least you lose a soft palate or something. Niiiiice. There is also a good salty soy going on and of course, squid.
This would be a most excellent snack if the squid were a little bit better. First off, I wish they didn’t smell like spicy fish food but more importantly, I wish they didn’t taste of hum-drum-bleh squid. The crispy and the soy and the chili bite are very tasty and then…fishy. I have a little note I jotted down when we reviewed these that says “snackfish” and I have no idea what I was trying to remind myself of when I wrote it. I’m not sure I need to sift through my memory though because “snackfish” seems pretty appropriate.
I wish these were better, they aren’t so I’m going to have to give them a below average rating. If you are a real squid hound, feel free to add a half pea to the rating but all Chili Squid Pretz are going to get from me is a
Rating of 2.5 wasabi peas out of a possible 5 wasabi peas.
