Porute (Whipped Cream)
Porute “Whipped Cream”
If you take a gander back to Valentines Day of this year you will find these fella’s strawberry flavored siblings. You might also notice that these are PorUte and not Porte like the strawberry variety, which had me a tad confused. I mean, they look about the same, they are packaged just about the same and they taste about the same…save the whole strawberry and not strawberry thing. Our current theory is that it is a bad English translation and they both should be either Porte or Porute. If anyone has a different and more plausible theory, let me know. Otherwise I’m going with the Engrish.
These, like the strawberry, had a dusting of cocoa on a chocolate shell and a cookie crunch. The whipped cream filling (the only thing that differed from the strawberry) was nice, light and creamy in an airy and less dense Three Musketeers way but with a hint of alcohol. It was a more subtle flavor that strawberry so the whole bitter cocoa dusting and sweety sweet strawberry dichotomy was missing. Not to say that these were bad, I just think the flavors were more dynamic in the strawberry.
The alcohol taste (maybe bourbon? Possibly port? Hard to tell) isn’t overpowering either, which does not subtract a point from the rating. Normally I would knock half a point off of anything carrying with it a strong alcohol taste, since it’s one of those flavors (like coconut) that seems to have a 50/50 chance of being tolerated or not, but the Whipped Cream Porute is very light on the alcohol. I didn’t even notice it until Rob mentioned that he thought he might taste a bit o’ booze on the Porute. It’s a very sneaky flavor indeed, so much so that I am going to go out on a limb and say that those of you who don’t much like alcohol tasting things might at least give this one a chance. I don’t know anyone of that persuasion so I don’t have an appropriate Guinea Pig.
Other than that, these Whipped Cream Porute are pretty much like their strawberry cousins; good cocoa bitter dusting, nice melty chocolate, sweet whipped filling and a satisfying cookie crunch. We really liked these “porute” and decided to go with a
Rating of 4.5 Wasabi Peas out of a possible 5.
