Lotte Zero Non Sugar Chocolate
Here was another item that caught our eye when we were looking at J-List and deciding what to order; Non Sugar Chocolate. The last time we had something that was non sugar it was a hard candy called Kanro Non Sugar Coffee Sankan and it had a goodly dollop of corn syrup listed in the ingredients. I’m not sure what the Japanese standards for “non sugar” are but corn syrup seems to me to fall pretty neatly under the ‘sugar’ category. The Zero Chocolate came from Japan and thus does not have an English ingredients translation so I can’t say if it has corn syrup in it or not. However, my Favorite Guinea Pig said it was really tough to believe that these didn’t have any sugar in them.
The other thing we noticed was the packaging. In typical Japanese fashion, these are perhaps a bit over packaged. They have a neat little slide out shelf where 5 individually wrapped goldish foiled chocolates lie. They are certainly elegant in their unnecessariness in terms of the packaging but they are also pleasant to the eye.
As to the chocolates they quite are different from any other sugar free chocolates I’ve had. These are smooth and melty, perhaps a touch stiffer than the chocolate part of an Andes mint and they are chocolaty! There is also an odd flavor to them…perhaps something that is a little caramelly, but I suspect that whatever the odd flavor is, it has to do with the Non Sugar quality of the Zero Chocolate. It’s not a flavor that detracts though. The Pigs enjoyed the chocolates, even more so knowing that they were ‘Non Sugar’ chocolate.
Rating of 4 Wasabi Peas out of a possible 5.

The main problem I had with Zero when I last had them (ages ago) was that they were more expensive than regular chocolates, but no lower in calories and had less of an intense chocolate flavor. The flavor may have changed since I last ate them.
The main problem is that they are intensely fatty. They do not appear to have any sugar in them though they have lactitol, Sucralose, and other artificial sweeteners. They seem so good because they contain cocoa butter, vegetable oil and butter. You can’t infuse that much fat into something and come out losing. 😉

I used to be able to find this, but lately it’s been quite impossible. Can you tell me what store, or where, you bought yours?
