Tako-Rice Drops
Oddly, this Tako is not Japanese for Octopus but rather the Japanese take on Taco. Yes indeed, the Japanese Mad Food Scientists tackle Mexican cuisine in this newest installment of Food drops. In the list of Food Drops that I was going to buy from J-List, this particular flavor made the cut every time I winnowed down my selection. Why? Because the Japanese are famous for their love of all things Mexican. Shoot, you can’t go two feet down any street without hitting a burrito or enchilada stand!
Yeah…no not really and that’s what makes this such a fun flavor. It’s like the Mad Food Scientists were sitting around talking about what other flavor they were going to make into food drops and one of them suggested something international. Then they had an argument about where and what until someone got out a map of the world and they played a game of Pin the Food Drop on a Nation. Around and around and around they go, where they land, nobody knows! STICK-O: Mexico.
I think all the spinning and blindfolding put the Mad Food Scientists a little off their game because Tako Rice Food Drops have some initial problems. When you first pop one of these in your mouth they are sweet and vaguely ricey with the barest hint of taco seasoning (chili powder, garlic, onion, yadda yadda). It’s not a very pleasant taste and at least one of my Guinea Pigs spit his out after the first 20 seconds or so with a “Hmmm. Yuck.” We might have all done the same but for the perseverance of one Guinea Pig who rode out the initial disappointment.
Holy cow, these are kinda tasty! They eventually bring out the taco-y, keep the ricey and lose the sweet. It’s like…well taco rice. I might even taste a hint of meatiness but that could be my brain filling in the standard meaty taste I associate with taco seasonings. However, this Food Drop is done really well once you get past the sweet bleh of the beginning. We even decided that the taco rice food drops were just as good (but more taco-y) as the Yaki Curry Food drops once they got going. I’m going to knock a half pea point off for bungling the initial taco taste but otherwise give Taco Rice Food Drops the same rating as the Yaki Curry drops. Take that as you will.
Rating of 3.5 Wasabi Peas out of a possible 5.

Perseverance is key to being a good guinea pig, you know. Where would science be today if guinea pigs had just quit whenever things got a mite unpleasant?
