These sounded like such a keen idea with their promise of buttery potato goodness but in the end, I would have to say they fell a bit short. I know from potato, being the first and last one into the mashed potato bowl at Thanksgiving, so I was really looking forward to seeing what they could do in Pretz form with my beloved potato. Sadly, I was disappointed.

Potato Pretz taste, to me, like a base Pretz stick that got tangled in a bit of raw potato juice (but still crisp). I definitely tasted a hint of that strange sharp raw potato taste that lingered around in my mouth for a bit. It wasn’t bad per se, just incongruent with the happy buttery tater on the package. TheMan will tell you that they don’t taste anything like raw potato but rather have a buttery flavor to them. We both agree they don’t taste much like baked, mashed or any kind of potato.

I’ll give a little on the “buttery” flavor. Maybe they tasted like buttery Pretz base that had gone a round with a freshly peeled potato. They certainly did not go quite as fast as the Pizza Pretz did when we were snacking at the Mumses house. Still, they were alright with respect to salty and decent in the crunchy department but the flavor was just a bit to generic “munchy” to get overly excited about. I just asked TheMan what he thought of them and he said that they reminded him of potato bread. Well put! I have always thought potato bread has an odd quality to it that reminded me of raw potatoes and I have never really been overly enthusiastic about potato bread in general. So, in fairness of the Potato Pretz being a Pretz but also acknowledging the Potato Pretz disappointing flavor, I’ll give them a-

OK… It is still early morning and I still have no dictionary at hand but I CAN manage to translate the kanji on this box. These are no ordinary potetos. These are Hokkaido potatos… Hokkaido is the northernmost island in Japan. Perhaps these potatos are very mild. I have no clue. Though I know that the regular Japanese word for “potato” is actually what we would call a sweet potato of sorts or yam. But the potatos on the box look like western potatos or “jaga imo” as the Japanese call them. Very interesting…
