I turn my back for a moment and Tohato makes another flavor of corn doodle. Not that I’m complaining because Tohato knows from tasty corn doodle, most of the time, and these are no exception. Today’s Tohato Caramel Corn flavored snack is: Ice Cream. Vanilla ice cream to be exact. Look, you can tell because of the little black spots on the doodles.

I thought at first I got a package with some mung on it but no, the doodles actually do have little black spots on them. You know, because that means real vanilla went into these. Hey, if Breyers can do it, why not Tohato? (incidentally, Breyer’s vanilla is one of my favorite flavors of vanilla ice cream so no harshing on their vanilla bean spot buzz from me.)

I found these Tohato corn doodles a little different from their predecessors in that there is no dusting of flavor goodness on the doodle. Instead, there is a micro-crunch coating of vanilla ice cream flavor wrapped protectively around the doodle. It’s different than the flavor dusting, a little bit tackier to the touch perhaps but then again you don’t get dust residue on your fingers. Six of one and all. Plus, it adds a nice micro-crunch to the doodle’s already pretty awesome doodle crunch. Crunchity all around. The coating does makes the corn doodle a little less melty in the mouth at first, but once you either crunch through the coating or the coating dissolves on your tongue it’s the old familiar Tohato melty doodle.

We had a bit of discussion about the taste. I can’t really taste any caramel cornness, but Tohato usually does a more sugar corn than caramel corn and that flavor would totally get lost in the vanilla ice cream doodles. I’d say these doodles are sweet creamy vanilla, or as one Guinea pig put it, “It’s the best artificial ice cream flavor I’ve tasted. It’s pretty hard to do fake ice cream”. We found that they started off with a bang of flavor that faded down fairly quickly to a happy vanilla buzz. This only makes you want to keep munching on them because that initial tasty burst is…well…tasty. Great marketing scheme on Tohato’s part.

All in all these were a pretty big hit among the Pigs. So much so, that by Guinea Pig consensus, Tohato Caramel Corn snack: Vanilla ice gets a

Rating of 5 Wasabi Peas out of a possible 5.
