Maeda-enRedBeanMochi

Hello again I’m back with more mochi although it shouldn’t be that much of a surprise since I mentioned it last week. Today we’re investigating the offerings of Maeda-en in terms of red bean mochi. Counting I Mei as an ice cream mochi outlier since I’ve only ever run into the one flavor of theirs, red bean ice cream mochi has now been reviewed from the three ice cream mochi companies: Mikawaya, Maeda-en and Sweety Novelty Company. And just like how I listed them, Maeda-en falls right in the middle of the bunch.

If you like red bean ice cream I’d really recommend Mikawaya heads above the competition but Maeda-en puts in a solid effort. The ice cream is a decent serviceable ice cream with a nice creaminess and beany inclusions that let you know real red beans exist without being obnoxious about it (I’m looking at YOU Sweety Novelty Company!). The flavor is a bit fruity odd and strangely not as sweet as I’m used to finding red bean flavored things but it is indeed red bean. I’m a little sad that the rice pastry wrapping isn’t a pretty matching color. I was sort of hoping that the new Maeda-en look included a like colored rice pastry wrapper for all their mochi but apparently not. Oh well.

I’m not in love with the Maeda-en version of red bean ice cream mochi but I’d certainly pick them up to munch on over the Sweety Novelty Company variant. Since Maeda-en comes in with a solid red bean ice cream mochi which is pretty much the middle road between Sweety Novelty and Mikawaya I should appropriately give them a middle of the road

Rating of 3 wasabi peas out of a possible 5 wasabi peas.
