Meiji Chocolate Porte Creamy Raisin Whip

Posted in 2.5 Wasabi Pea Rating, Sweet at 12:38 am by Boo

I found another flavor of the Porute/Porte/Polte fellas, this time it’s “Creamy Raisin Whip”. I’ve done a chestnut version here and that links to the whipped cream and the strawberry…which I’ve just gone and linked for you here. Ah well.

The Portes (or however they are saying that name, although now there are two votes for Porte, one for Polte and one for Porute) are a trufflesque dollop of flavor which sits on a crunchity cookie, then the whole thing is dipped in chocolate and dusted with cocoa. It’s crunchy, sweet, chocolate, bitter and creamy all in one. Sadly, these particular fellas had a run in with the heat so the cocoa dusting had become incorporated into the chocolate coating (which in turn sort of melted a tad) but you can still taste the slight chocolate bitter of cocoa dusting. You can also see the picture of a non-melted Porte with the cocoa dusty so at one time they did look like the package. I assume.

As to the Porte at hand, they smell kinda boozy. I’m not sure if raisin flavoring smells of booze of if there is some sort of rum flavoring or whatever but they sure do whiff of alcohol. The ingredients don’t list any booze like flavoring so I have to think it’s the “raisin powder” which is giving the Porte a slightly tipsy smell. Raisin powder sort of tastes like artificial rum flavoring too. I suppose it also tastes of raisin after a fashion but none of my Guinea Pigs took a liking to these at all. Even with the crunchity cookie, delicious chocolate and delightful cocoa dusting bitterness, the raisin powder manages to bring all the joy down to a disappointed “Hrrrm”.

The Pigs reported an unpleasant aftertaste and yeah…it’s there. I suppose the best way to describe it is “poor man’s raisin rum after flavor” because that’s kinda what it is. Maybe if Meiji had used chopped up dried raisins instead of raisin powder this would have been better. As it stands, I’m going with the Pig’s recommended

Rating of 2.5 wasabi peas out of a possible 5 wasabi peas.
