Choco Baby

Heh. Choco Baby. It just makes me laugh. These little fellas are, well little fellas. Each Choco Baby is about the size of a grain of rice. Well maybe about as tall as a grain of rice since they certainly are much fatter than rice. Maybe if you took a couple grains of rice and tied them together you would have something about the size of a Choco Baby. Regardless, they are small (maybe a touch shorter than a Tic-Tac if you will). They do come with their own mascot though…

That actually kind of freaks me out because the Choco Baby (?) critter looks disturbingly similar to the Choco Babies, except with facial features, ears and…blobby appendage things. I know I’d eat the Baby mascot creature right along with the Choco Babies if I wasn’t careful and you don’t want that kind of critter running loose in your stomach. They would wreak all sorts of havoc. So yeah,I have issues with the tiny candy sized and shaped mascot.

What Choco Baby is/are (?) are little cylinders of chocolate wrapped around a filling. Notice in the picture that the Choco Babies seem to have a star like center? Take a peek (apologies for the blurriness, these are my pics and not TheMan’s. Still, you can vaguely see that the centers are indeed lighter than the outer wrapping). The filling might as well be chocolate though because these fellas are so small it’s hard to taste anything but the chocolate. They seem to have a sort of nutty impression, and since the ingredients have Palm nut and Shea nut I suppose that is what is in the center.

I liked them. I liked them a lot. They were chocolaty, maybe a bit of nutty and a touch of bitter. They melted nicely after a bit of hanging out in your mouth and all in all I was pleased with them. Badmovie too was all about the Choco Baby(ies) while TheMan thought they had a bitter aftertaste. DQ sided with TheMan on that one, although both of them really liked the Choco Babies up to the point of the aftertaste. I thought the aftertaste was bitter in a cocoa sense, which was all right in my book.

TheMan did mention that he thought the chocolate was a bit waxy tasting and it does seem to have a kind of initial coating before you get to the chocolate goodness. I’ve had some mediocre chocolate before that had the same sort of texture to it so I just chalked it up to waxy chocolate. Then Badmovie read the ingredients.

Shellac? SHELLAC? That just made Badmovie’s day, I’ll tell you. Nothing like getting your RDA dosage of shellac. He couldn’t stop eating them (and neither could I) so we wondered if it was the shellac that kept us coming back for more. I’m more inclined to think it could be the grape skin coloring thing but then again, maybe I’m a shellac junkie. Whatever the reason, I was all about rating these fellas really high (if only for amusement about the shellac) but in difference to half of my tasting crowd, I going to give Choco Baby a

Rating of 3.5 Wasabi Peas out of a possible 5.

See? I would have rather them higher. But that’s just me….

I would have too, but I will often take into account how the whole sampling crew feels about the foods. For the record, I’da given them a 4.5 but I didn’t mind the bitter or waxy.
