Kasugai Strawberry Gummy

Posted in 2.5 Wasabi Pea Rating, Gummy, Sweet at 12:46 am by Boo

We’re back again with Kasugai Gummy Candy, this time in strawberry. There are a couple marked differences between pineapple and strawberry, besides the obvious color and taste. First, the little strawberry packages don’t proudly exclaim ‘Super Juicy!” but instead just modestly let you know that the flavor is strawberry. There is also some Japanese writing that might say “Super Juicy” but most likely just modestly says “strawberry gummy” in Japanese.

What leads me to my suspicions?

This. Yesterday, Kasugai was all about the new aged pineapple wisdom, saying

The gorgeous taste of fully ripened pineapple,
imposing as a southern island king crowned
in glory, is yours to enjoy in every soft
and juicy Kasugai Pineapple Gummy.

And today?

Kasugai’s strawberry gummy, made from fresh strawberry
juice is a very delicious gummy.
Please have a fun time with this strawberry gummy.

They didn’t even bother to capitalize ‘strawberry’ or ‘gummy’ like they did with the pineapple. Does this message read less “This Strawberry Gummy is the stuff gummy dreams are made of” and more “The strawberry really isn’t as good as the pineapple. Please just eat the strawberry until we can get some more pineapple to you.”? I mean really, “imposing as a southern king crowned in glory” versus “made from fresh strawberry juice”? Man, strawberry got the short end of the stick. And then was beat with it. Ouch.

At least both are “Fresh and Juicy”. The strawberry gummy lacks the cute heart shape of the pineapple and instead goes with a sort of dollop looking shape. Circular I guess which…Zzzzzzzzz. They are made from a gummy that is softer than Gummi gummy but still stiff enough that you can’t easily break it apart by sqooshing it between your finger and thumb. Hey, I try to be scientific in my snack research and if I have to squish a wobbly gummy, I shall make that sacrifice in the name of science.

Squishy squishy. Heh.

Anyway, the strawberry is…well…not as good as the pineapple. It’s got a strong strawberry smell to it but it also has a prevalent chemical smell to it. One of my Guinea Pigs said that they thought perhaps the softer strawberry smell isn’t hiding the base gummy smell as well as the citrus flavors did. Perhaps. Or perhaps this strawberry is less ‘fresh berry’ and more ‘lab manufactured’ and that quality is coming out in the aroma.

Strawberry Gummy Candies taste decently of strawberry and a little bit of ‘labberry’ but mostly like gummy strawberry jam. I guess that’s still technically strawberry but I’m rather less than enthused by gummy strawberry jam than I am by gummy strawberry fruit. I think my Pigs felt the same way so while strawberry jam is indeed strawberry, it was also disappointing.

These are not the best gummies but they’ll do if you don’t have any other gummy on hand. And you really, really, can’t wait to go out and pick up a package of the pineapple or the orange.

Rating of 2.5 wasabi peas out of a possible 5 wasabi peas.
